Did you know that in the United States, more than 42 million people are affected by food insecurity? Yes, that is a startling fact but when you also consider that 1 in 6 children going hungry every day—the situation becomes dire. We, at Mission of Love Charities (MOLC), are committed to making a difference to alleviate food insecurity in our community.
In 2019, MOLC became a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application center. We understand that SNAP applicants and recipients are those with the greatest need in our community. On a national level, participants in the program are mostly children, elderly persons, or individuals with a disability. In fact:
SNAP serves every community in the country; however, some communities like the ones that MOLC serves are more at-risk for food insecurity than others. That is why every day our bilingual case managers are on-site helping our clients process SNAP applications and working with community leaders to identify and educate those who might be eligible for benefits.
Just recently, MOLC sponsored a virtual town hall meeting with Glass Manor Elementary School in Oxon Hill, Maryland to promote the SNAP program. With solid support and outreach to parents from Principal Tracy Brown, more than 20 families attended the meeting and have expressed an interest in signing up for the program.
As hard as we are working, we, unfortunately, know that food insecurity is still on the rise in our community. MOLC is working hard with partner organizations to fight hunger, but we need all the help we can get! If you want to join us, please consider making a donation today.
