Our 11th Annual Lighting Pathways Humanitarian Awards Ceremony & Fundraiser, held on May 21, 2015, was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who attended, helped, and contributed! Baker, III Prince George’s County Executive Decatur “Bucky” Trotter Humanitarian Award         The Honorable Tommie Broadwater, Sr. Former Maryland State Senator Candle of Service Award         Wanda Ramos Chief, Central Area Operations Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission Candle of Service Award Entertainment will be provided by Andrea Pais. Born in India, Andrea grew up listening to soul legends such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Ella Fitzgerald, thanks to her father’s extensive Western record collection. Today, she performs regularly in the Washington, DC area. read more

Throughout my childhood, teenage years and my twenties, I struggled with self-esteem. Growing up, I was called all kinds of names and looked down upon because of my looks and because I’m saving myself for marriage. People have used and abused me, and have taken my kindness for weakness, and I constantly beat up on myself because I thought that there was something wrong with me. I have been called slow, retarded, ugly and that no one would want me. I felt horrible about myself, and contemplated suicide several times because I felt I had nothing to live for. But when I came to the Mission of Love Charities’ Life Skills class, I learned that I am somebody and I do have a lot to offer. The program not only prepared me for a job, it prepared me for whatever life throws at me. I am very grateful for this class because I have been able to get a lot of things off my chest. Little did I realize that I was able to touch others in my class.
